Choosing a Wedding Makeup Artist
Selecting a Makeup Artist for your wedding day may be like finding a new hairstylist. Think back to the last time you needed to find a new stylist. How did you go about looking for the right person? I usually look for people that have beautiful hair and ask them where they got it done. Finding a Makeup Artist to suit your style may require a similar tactic. However, narrowing in on the right person will involve some research, as well as some trust. It’s easy to overlook or assume that your “everyday makeup” applied a little heavier will do the trick. It’s important to hire a Makeup Artist that specializes in bridal makeup, and that has been trained in how to create a long-lasting application that will look not only amazing in person, but on film. Look at their wedding album and take note of how their makeup looked throughout the day and in different lighting situations. Did the makeup look just as good before the ceremony as it did in the last frame? Talk to your photographer about what kind of look you want for your wedding pictures and ask them for a recommendation. Your photographer will be able to give you a professional opinion about someone in the industry that they may have already worked with. Use you local resources to research professional Makeup Artists in your area. These include bridal magazines, bridal websites or bridal expos. Ask to see their portfolio and see if their makeup style matches your own. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and get a sense of the artist’s personality. You will want to work with someone that is interested in creating a makeup that works with your comfort level, and will offer professional advice and tips. If you feel that you have found a good match, schedule your pre-wedding consultation, often times called a “trial run,” and be prepared to pay for their time. In order to make the most of your trial run, come prepared with tear-sheets or photographs of makeup t... |

Hair and Makeup for the South Asian Bride
Finding the Right Indian Wedding Makeup ArtistIf you are a South Asian bride, you will understand the angst and frustration involved in finding the right makeup artist for your wedding. There are two things we want to avoid with wedding makeup: First is the use of the wrong foundation (which has mired South Asian wedding makeup for some reason), and Second is the ‘bride stuck in the 1950’s’ look (not that there was anything wrong with that, but we have new trends now). For my wedding, I wanted someone who was familiar with Indian weddings and our outfit changes. For South Asian brides, putting on the outfits is half the battle! It was important for me to find someone who knew how to dress an Indian bride and to know where to ‘pin this’ and ‘put that’. Indian weddings are an entire day, sometimes week long affairs involving multiple outfit, hair and makeup changes! I needed someone who could be at the venue the entire day, and also someone who could do both makeup and hair. This limited my search to a select few people which caused me to go into panic mode! Photo Credit: Tomas Ramos Photography Just when I had thrown in the towel, and decided to do my wedding makeup MYSELF (because that is really how bad it got)…I decided to give my old friend Google a try (believe it or not, I found most of my wedding vendors on Google, and was not disappointed!). With my hands shaking, my mind on a mission and my then fiance and mother looking on, worried about my mental health (well, not really, I just threw that in for extra effect)…I typed in ‘indian wedding makeup artists’ and there came my answer..Saman Ansari at Studio Sila ! South Asian Bride Makeup TipsWorking with Saman for my wedding was such a great learning experience about the art of wedding makeup that I wanted to share some tips with other South Asian brides going through the same thing: 1) Go to a Trial Session:
